Many only engage with the events of 9/11 as a moment and a meme, as a deliverable whose receipt “changed things forever.” It lies at the foundation of our social order, and yet there is little interrogation of the formation of the event, into the causes that may never be fully knowable. We play the track over and over without engaging with the muses, dynamic and contingent, that gave it birth. That’s why the 9/11 Preludes set out to examine the pre-history of 9/11 through a series of operatic music dramas, living texts that revolt against the hegemony of recorded and replayable content. The libretto is in English, set to music from start to finish. The musical style pulls from Broadway, Disney, and Romantic opera influences, and the form conveys the opacity, ambiguity, and gravity suiting the subject. The project is structured into distinct episodes of true stories, all of which point to the same future event. This performance, of the first act only, takes place in 1996 in a New York prison, where a mafia gangster is persuaded by his lawyer and an FBI undercover to gather intel on his mysterious terror-linked cellmate.
