Spotlight On: Aklia's
For over 25 years, Aklia Chinn has been serving the Hollywood community, not to mention the film and television industry, with ethnic jewelry and unusual gifts from her shop - Aklia's - at 1515 N. Cahuenga Boulevard. And for over a decade, her space has also housed Rehab Salon, which specializes in "kinky, curly, and wavy" hair.
The unique location formerly housed a recording studio, among other businesses.
"The building has an interesting history and it is beautiful, so that was really... what drew me there," Chinn said.
The Covid-19 pandemic has obviously complicated things for the shop and the salon, but Chinn has been making things work.
"With the Covid situation, I'm certainly not alone. We're all struggling and facing challenges I'm sure that we never could have imagined we would be reckoning with," Chinn said. "Having to close suddenly for those three months was very - I don't want to keep running the word challenging into the ground, but - it was very difficult.
"We were able to get a PPP loan, fortunately... We were also very fortunate that we were awarded a grant through Pay Pal and the American Enterprise Opportunity Association."
